An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
